Giclee'

Giclee...French for “to spray,” (pronounced “zhee-clay”),is a process where an original image is digitally scanned and  printed, in my case, on an Iris Printer.

The printer-technician,  converts a piece of original artwork into a digital image by means of a high-end digital capture scanner or with a large-format camera. This is a highly technical process combining the skills of a photographer and a computer technician. Lighting is extremely important and the entire surface of the original work must be uniformly lighted. High-resolution prints cannot be obtained without this digital conversion process.

The next step in the giclee' process is color correction. Again, this is where the printer-technician’s artistic, photographic, and computer skills are combined to tweak the digital image colors to match those of the original artwork. An experienced eye combined with modern computer technology enables the printer to deliver outstanding colors compared to the original artwork. In this step, the artist collaborates with the printer to ensure the color adjustments create a reproduction image that is virtually indistinguishable from the original.

The last step in the process is the actual printing. At this point, the digital image meets the Iris Printer. The printer-technician loads the Iris Printer with the medium on which the digital image will be printed. I have selected canvas to reproduce my original work. Canvas gives you the appearance of an original oil painting and protective glass is not required. Giclee reproductions are not mass produced. Each canvas takes an hour to print and is individually hand pulled and inspected.

For the artist, a Giclee is generally more expensive than other traditional reproduction processes.  But, it allows for smaller editions, for pieces to be printed one at a time or as the artist requires, and the entire edition does not have to be printed and paid for at one time. I think you will be pleased with the results of the process, the price of owning a limited edition reproduction and enjoy the art for a lifetime.
